Susan Mayer the Weak

Berbicara tentang serial, aku jadi ingin mengoceh tentang salah satu scene dalam Desperate Housewives. Yeah, I kind of lame for watching the serial. But hey, who are you to judge me? :p

Seriously, I love Desperate Housewives. I love the characters, I love the story, I love the tragedy, I love the irony, I love the drama, and I also love the lesson implied. Kesemua faktor itulah yang membuatku betah menghabiskan CD demi CD, episode demi episode, yang alhasil jadi sering mengganggu waktu tidurku.

Anyway, yang ingin aku bicarakan adalah dua karakter utama serial ini, Susan Mayer dan Edie Britt. Yep, people might say that Edie Britt is a slut. Well, sometimes I agree with the statement. Namun, seperti yang aku bicarakan di postingan sebelumnya, things isn't always black and white.

Dalam ke-slut-annya, Edie sebenarnya adalah seorang perempuan yang kuat. She knows exactly what she wants. She's acting slut because she wants to, that's what she is. Yah, mungkin dia terlalu berlebihan dalam menyikapi masalah-masalah tertentu. Seperti saat ia mensabotase hubungan Susan dengan berpura-pura menjadi kekasih Mike saat lelaki itu kehilangan ingatan. Atau ketika ia mencoba bunuh diri hanya untuk mempertahankan Carlos tetap berada di sisinya. But, on top of that, I admire her bravery.

Dalam episode 12 di season 5, Edie dan Susan diceritakan tengah terperangkap di ruang bawah tanah. Untuk mengisi kekosongan, Edie mulai mencatat pria-pria yang pernah menjalin hubungan dengan Susan. Hasilnya:

Edie    : "Seven boyfriends through high school and college, only…41 days single. What does that tell you? It's a cry for help, Mayer!"

Susan    : "Why not you look at your mirror, Edie. You're famous for the number of man you conquer. It's not a compliment, you tramp! Ok, I am not taking a relationship tips from a woman who has hooked up with, what is it, over a thousand men?!

Edie    : "Okay, that's true, I enjoy the aces. But the difference is, I go after them because I want them, you go after them because you need them."

Susan    : "That is not much of a distinction."

Edie    : "Yes, it is. You have holes in your heart, that can only filled by a pair of trousers. Face it Mayer, YOU'RE WEAK!

Yep, aku sekarang mengerti mengapa aku tak pernah menyukai tokoh Susan Mayer. She is an icon of weakness. She couldn't do anything without company, in this case: male. She is a drama queen. A big one. She cries for nothing, she babbles about nothing. She even does unnecessary things to get people to like her. One word, WEAK.

Apa yang salah dengan being single? I'm doing OK being alone for one and a half year, and more years before. I enjoyed every moment of it. Persis seperti lagu yang didendangkan oleh Oppie Andaresta, 'I'm Single and Very Happy'. Buat aku, sendiri bukanlah kutukan. Justru, kesendirian adalah kebebasan. Bebas menjalani hidup tanpa ada yang mengatur. Bebas mengeksplor kekuatan diri kita sendiri. Bebas menyuarakan pendapat dan ekspresi.

True, ada saat-saat dimana kita menginginkan seseorang untuk berbagi. Setiap manusia membutuhkan kasih sayang, itu merupakan salah satu kebutuhan emosional yang paling utama kurasa. Namun, tidak lantas membuat seseorang harus menyambar apapun yang ada di hadapannya kan? Seperti apa yang dikatakan oleh Edie, kita harus menginginkannya. Keinginan, bukan hanya sekedar kebutuhan yang membabi buta.

Aaah, apa sih yang aku tahu tentang kesendirian?? Aku toh tidak lagi sendiri. Kesendirianku sudah berlalu lebih dari setahun yang lalu. Meski terkadang aku masih merindukan kekuatan yang terkandung dalam sebuah kesendirian...

Oh, btw, the character I admire most in Desperate Housewives is Lynette Scavo. Mungkin nanti aku akan mengulas tentang karakter masing-masing tokoh di serial ini. Nanti ya, kalau aku ada waktu. Hehehehe...
